Welcome back to another installment of my Italian summer abroad blogging experience. As always, I hope this reaches you in good health and great spirits. Upon my arrival to “Bel Paese,” the beautiful country, I spent a few days in the city of Rome. Visiting Rome was my first true lesson in losing all sense of expectations of other cultures and being open to learning and experiencing firsthand. The city was nothing like I expected. It was very urban and instantly put me in the mindset of being in New York City. From the local vendors, the graffiti-covered walls, and the busy streets, I couldn’t help but think of the Big Apple. This is not a negative point. It simply provides a globalized perspective on my initial experience. I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to get lost in a city with so much history and beauty.
Onward to Forever
The next phase of my journey involved traveling to Montepulciano, Tuscany. Taking the train and being able to experience the beauty of the Tuscan countryside is an experience I will not soon forget. Once my train ride ended, I realized how certain parts of the country are, from busy streets to a very rural and slow-paced town. I eventually found a cab and continued my journey to Montepulciano. My Airbnb accommodations are lovely and hosted by a local couple and their adorable dog. At this moment, I began to miss my boys and understand that this was my home for the next couple of weeks. I had been asking for time to myself for so long, and now I have no idea what to do with it.
What Brought Me Here
After settling in, the time came for me to buckle down and get to work. My supervisor, Sylvia, is the best. I quickly got to see just how different our cultures were regarding business and office flow. There was a very relaxed flow and no true sense of urgency. This was refreshing; however, I could not settle into the mood. Sylvia allowed me to decide what my overall experience would be. This was very exciting yet intimidating. As I would do with a client that hired me as a consultant, I asked what she wanted for the brand. She aims to increase international awareness of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano brand. I got to work conducting some research on the organization and decided to start with one specific region, the U.S. This week was all about determining what works and what doesn’t. From the best practices to update their social media, which is outsourced, to finding the top U.S wine-centered events to attend and promote live and in living color, I am leaving no stone unturned.
